Some of the Most Successful Entrepreneurs Have This in Common

Have you ever felt it was almost impossible to focus on one thing?  Or, maybe you’ve had one idea that you’re working on and then, suddenly, another one hits! So you never finish your original project. But you’re also creative, high-energy and have an ability to hyper-focus on something you find innately interesting.

You’re not alone, especially if you’re an entrepreneur. In fact, Charles Schwab, Sir Richard Branson, Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad, and JetBlue founder David Neeleman can all relate. These  entrepreneurs are not only extremely successful, but they all have an ADHD diagnosis. In fact, many credit their diagnosis to their success.

You don’t have to have been diagnosed with ADHD to relate to these feelings.  These traits make you a perfect candidate for entrepreneurship!
According to Entrepreneur Magazine, some ways these ADHD traits show up in your business are:

  • I have tons of business ideas!
  • The hardest thing for me about launching a business is just starting.
  • I’ve tried launching a handful of businesses, but I just couldn’t focus on one for long enough.
  • I am always on the move, looking for new opportunities.
  • I love taking risks — the bigger, the better.
  • I can do anything I put my mind to.
  • I certainly do not live a normal life.

So how do you use your ADHD superpowers to create a successful business?  In addition to finding ways to manage distractions, here are a few ways to achieve success while managing ADHD:

  1.  Hire a coach or find a mentor.  A business coach, especially one who works with individuals with ADHD, can make a huge difference in your business. If a coach isn’t in the cards, consider finding a mentor.

2.Focus on ONE business at a time.  You may have several great ideas going through your head at a time, but it’s important to pick one business that you’ll see through to a point of success.  Have a notebook where you jot down your other business ideas for a later time.

 3. Once you’ve started your business, focus on ONE goal at a time.  What do you want to bring to your business right now?  More clients? Revenue? Ideas?  Pick one goal you’re working on and focus only on that for a specific timeframe.

 4. Outsource or automate tasks that you hate doing and are draining your time.  If you find yourself spending hours creating and sending out social media posts, look into an automated scheduler or hire someone to take care of this task for you.

 5. Most importantly, take care of yourself!  We all tend to get pulled into activities that we enjoy doing and lose track of time.  Make sure you step  away from work and take time out to exercise, meditate, walk or whatever makes you feel good and grounds you.

The first step to running your successful business is becoming aware of your strengths and weaknesses and working with them, not against them.

Use your creativity, energy and ability to hyper-focus to produce amazing things.  Make sure you understand your energy cycle and work within that. But, don’t forget to take time for yourself.
