How an Accountability Partner Can Help You Reach Your Goals

How can you get from where you are now to where you want to go?

Are you on a journey to start a business, lose weight, advance in your career?  Maybe you know where you want to end up at the end of the journey, but the question is – how do you get there?

Follow the Steps

Regardless of whether your goal is business, personal, or health related, there are very similar steps to get to where you want to be.  Following the steps may seem like a simple process, but it’s not always that easy.

Just knowing WHAT you need to do is not always going to help you get there.  The missing ingredient is often someone who can hold you ACCOUNTABLE.  Someone you know who has your back, yet will push you past your comfort zone when you need it.

Over the years I’ve relied on many different people for accountability.  When I was going from a virtual non-runner to running half marathons, I relied on one close friend to keep me on track and to stop me from giving up when I wanted to quit. Over the years I have hired personal trainers and coaches to help me to lose weight, improve my fitness, and finally start my business.  I’m not sure I would have followed through without this support

Of course, the bulk of the work with anything you do is going to be on you.  Your accountability buddy/partner/coach/team should GUIDE you along the way, not tell you what to do.

Here are some questions an accountability coach may ask you:

  1. Where are you now?
  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your core values/beliefs?
  • What does your daily routine look like?
  • What is working for you now?
  1. Where do you want to go?
  • Where do you want to be next year?
  • What does success look  like?
  • If you had a magic wand, what would your life look like?
  • Why do you really want this?
  1. What do you need to get there?
  • What are some action steps you need to take?
  • How can you include these steps in your daily life?
  1. What might get in your way?
  • What can happen that may prevent you from taking this action?
  • What can you do when distractions come up?
  • What obstacles may come up?
  1. What do you need to stay accountable to your goal?
  • How would you like to be held accountable?
  • What do you feel is in your control?  Out of your control?
  •  How often do you need an accountability check in?

As a coach, part of my work is to be an accountability partner for my clients. If we work together, I won’t tell you what to do or how to do it, but I am there by your side, guiding you as much or as little as you need.

I would love to hear what helps YOU stay accountable to your goals.  Send me a message at : lisa@lisademarcocoaching.com.
